"It's hard to watch your children learn to walk, learn to understand and use language, and learn to get into anything and everything within reach, without believing that they are capable of learning about anything they are curious about." ---Mary Griffitn, The Unschooling Handbook
I feel so blessed that we have four children......varying in age from ten on down to 11 months. It is very important for me to watch Grace, as she has learned to crawl and now pull up, as she babbles and points, and listen to CC as she expounds on one of her imaginary stories or gets dressed by herself. Then I watch Fran and Will, older but no less curious, trying new things. It has helped me to understand that what Mary Griffith writes about trust is very true. Why does the curiousity and desire to explore in most kids disappear about the age of 7 or 8? I think because they're not allowed to do waht is natural to them. They are expected to soak in what someone else is telling them is important and make it so for themselves. But that is just not how human beings are wired. We are created to be curious, to investigate, to explore, and to make sense of the world around us by doing so. Thanks to my little ones for making it easier to trust my older kids!
